what is cubism?Cubism is the most influential visual art styles of the early twentieth-century. It is a conceptual approach to realism in art, which aims to depict the world as it is and not as it seems. It was the joint invention of two men, Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque. Picasso and Braque challenged conventional forms of representation, such as perspective, which had been the rule since the renaissance. Their aim was to develop a new way of seeing which reflected the modern age. Cubism has been analyzed by historians in terms of phases. Analytic Cubism, in which forms seem to be analyzed and fragmented. In Synthetic Cubism, paintings were composed of fewer and simpler forms based to a lesser extent on natural objects. The idea was not to revolt, but to show that art had so much more in terms of creativity and that artistic limits could be expanded.
